ACCESS CONTROL

Attacks aim to control your most valuable assets; this is achieved through privileged access. Privileged access is the gateway to all critical infrastructure and applications, both in the local datacenter and in the cloud.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Imagine you are a bank. It might seem like a strange request, but just imagine it… Ready? OK.

How much money do you think is in a bank’s cash registers? Enough to have a security guard at the entrance, watching to make sure no one can easily steal it, right? The thing is, it has to be well-protected from criminals, but also flexible enough for people to make deposits and withdrawals without every single operation being deeply scrutinized (which would take much more time, and the bank aims to be agile).

Now think, how much money do you think is in that same bank’s vault? Enough to protect it with many more layers of security, right? Although the process to get in and out is more scrupulous, the bank has much more to lose if something went wrong, so it doesn’t think twice.

This is privileged access management. The riskier an access is if compromised, the more layers of security it will have to protect it.

WHAT IS PRIVILEGED ACCESS?

There are many types of privileged access (local admin accounts, domain admin accounts, service accounts, application credentials, SSH keys) throughout a company’s environment.

There are accounts, credentials, and privileges on devices, applications, and operating systems that allow organizations to protect their infrastructure and applications, carry out their activities efficiently, and maintain confidentiality policies over sensitive data.

Attackers seek privileged credentials, as they can be used to cause catastrophic damage to the company, which is why it is necessary to protect, manage, and supervise them in a special way.
